ARTIST STATEMENT
Art as a transformative entity of social change seeks to transcend what limits, confines, separates, and differentiates us. Community art serves for the participant’s construction and education, complementing individual action with collective reflection, thus achieving a common identity and sense of belonging. This way art becomes a liaison that empowers communities, creating or reinventing community leaders who will give continuity to the work initiated by artists.
Through the sculpture I aspire to document the meaning of experiences of the community’s participants and the result of the transdisciplinary research of the artists. The complexity that evolves from the networking process within the internal and external environment will result in emergent properties that will be represented through multidimensionality.
The inclusion of metal as protagonist in my work is simultaneous to the introduction of my work as an artist. Essentially, the steel as the prevailing material and the work’s dimensions, the meaning, and the composition in affinity to the environment. It is about working with steel as a constructive material in reference to its mass, weight, support, compression, and friction, what binds me to the continuous development of works that lead to this purpose.
Through the study of the architecture’s principles, the referents that address all structural elements, is how I approach in multiple ways the results of a fundamentally investigative work throughout the methods of manufacturing, engineering, and construction.
Observation is what highlight the steel’s potential as one of the most effective materials in the making of pieces that, through design and composition, manage to apprehend my greatest concern: the spatial arrangement.
Based on the study of various construction possibilities, I come to forged iron (known as cor- ten steel), stainless steel, and reinforced steel; materials that have accompanied my work during the past 30 years.
